Previously, Dee and Fletcher infiltrated a high level elite replicant death match event at a wealthy mansion in Santa Barbara. Fletcher relayed a message out and learned LAPD would arrive in 30 minutes.
While waiting, the event is about to begin and Dee was chosen to fight first.
Chapter 21: Broken Shards
Shift 11: Night
Location: Santa Barbara → Mansion → Underground Fighting Area
Dee faced the tall, muscular male replicant in front of her, surrounded by the glass hexagon, outside of which the owners and other replicant fights watched. She held a knife in her hands, blade pointed back toward her, and waited.
The male in front of her, Xander, held a carpenter’s hammer in his right hand. He had a scowl on his face.
“Betting is over!” Mr. Katsuro called out. “Let the fight begin!”
The lights turned down, save for those right over the hexagon, plunging the area outside the glass in shadows.
Dee decided not to waste any time and charged forward, rushing Xander.
Xander moved forward to meet her, faster than expected, taking her off-guard. He slammed the head of the hammer into her mouth, knocking her to the side.
She spat out blood and teeth against the glass wall, eliciting yells and screams from the audience.
Dee stumbled back, blood dripping from her mouth.
Xander grinned and rushed toward her.
Noting his speed, she let him come, dodging his hammer swing and jabbing the knife into his hand and through.
He grunted, dropping the hammer and staggering away, clutching the wrist of the hand that had the knife through it. He gripped the handle with his other hand and pulled it out. Blood dripped between his fingers as he faced her, growling.
She moved in close.
He swung at her.
She ducked, stepped back and kicked forward, catching him in the teeth with her boot.
His head rocked back. He stumbled, hand to his mouth, before spitting blood with bits of broken teeth to the side.
“Now we’re even,” Dee muttered, blood still seeping out of the corner of her mouth.
Xander roared and charged, swinging wildly.
Dee dodged back and sidestepped, keeping him at a distance. When he tired, she moved in.
He slashed the air and she was forced to retreat once more. With a sudden thrust, he threw the knife at her.
It spun through the air toward her.
She ducked to the side and it hit the glass behind her, dropping to the floor. She snatched it up and charged.
He backed up until his back hit the wall, his eyes wide with sudden fear.
She feinted toward his head and he blocked. She slid on her knees under his arms and thrust the knife into his gut.
The breath left him. He gasped.
She rolled away and stood as he clutched at his stomach.
He collapsed to the floor.
“Xander!” The female owner cried out.
Did she care for him? d6 = 3
No but she hated losing.
“You useless piece of shit!”
Dee stood over Xander, who groaned and reached out with his hand.
“Finish him,” Mr. Katsuro’s voice boomed out from the dark.
She crouched down, reached for the knife, still in Xander’s gut. She got a good grip on it. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, the other hand on his back, gentle. She jerked the blade from his gut to his heart in one sudden move.
He gasped and died.
“You bitch!” The owner called out.
Dee stood, hands and clothes covered in blood, the red vibrant in the bright light from above.
The lights around the hexagon came on, illuminating the room as before.
Dee looked out at the owners and replicants.
Mr. Katsuro clapped, the sound hollow and empty in the large, carpeted room. “What an entertaining first round!” He called out. “We shall have a break, 15 minutes until the next fight!”
Mechanics Breakdown
Initiative: Dee goes first
She charges and attacks.
d12 + d10 = 2,4 → 0 vs d10 + d8 = 10,8 → 2
Xander deals 3 damage + Critical. Dee drops to 5/8 health.
Critical (crushing): d10 = 1 → Teeth knocked out, disadvantage to Manipulation rolls.
Xander’s turn, he continues his assault as Dee backs up.

Dee stabs him in the hand.
He pulls the knife out of his hand.
Dee’s turn. She attacks, weaponless.

Dee gets two successes more than Xander. 3 harm + Critical.
Xander drops to 1/7 health.
Critical (crushing): d12 = 1 → Teeth knocked out
Xander’s turn. He tries to attack her with the knife, at disadvantage.
3 → 0 Successes vs 2,1 → 0 Successes.
He hacks and slashes but she dodges away.
Dee’s turn, she attacks. 2,10 = 2 Successes vs 10 = 2 Successes
No damage.
He backs off and throws the knife at her.
Firearms: d10 = 3 → 0 successes
She grabs it off the floor and charges.
9,2 → 1 success vs 3 → 0 successes
She stabs him in the gut, dropping him to 0 health.
She finishes him.
Insight: 2d8 = 4,8 → 1 Success
Dee suffers 2 stress, dropping her to 1 Resolve.
Fletcher stood in a small locker room, faced away from the communal showers, where Dee stood under one of the spouts, cold water washing over her.
He faced the door, arms crossed.
Her pile of bloody clothing had been tossed onto the floor.
There were racks of clothes, feminine and masculine, of all kinds against the wall.
Minutes passed before Dee shut the water off and toweled dry.
She went over to the racks, looking through, passing over the glitzy dresses and revealing tops, picking out sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt.
“Are you okay?” Fletcher asked, turning to look at her.
Dee gave a long, drawn-out sigh. “I don’t know how to answer that question anymore. I don’t know if I ever did. I don’t know if I ever knew what ‘okay’ is. I don’t know that I’ve ever been ‘okay’.” She looked at him, putting her hands in the pocket of the sweatshirt.
Fletcher nodded. “It was a stupid question.”
“It was,” she replied.
“Shouldn’t be too long now.”
“Let’s hope not.”
Through the door, back into the arena, the hexagon had been cleaned up, the corpse taken way, although there were still bloody streaks on the glass.
The owners were drinking, chatting, the winners happier than the losers. Xander’s owner was upset, scowling and sitting alone.
One of Katsuro’s guards had come in and was speaking to him by the entrance.
Observation: 2d10 = 9,8 → 2 Successes*
*Critical = Discover Something Unexpected
Fletcher noticed the guard who spoke seemed tense, nervous. He noticed the guard mouth the word ‘Wallace’.
Katsuro showed surprise, before smiling and nodding. He spoke some words back, and the guard went back up the stairs. The two who stood by the door remained.
“Something’s not right,” Fletcher said.
“Alright,” Mr. Katsuro said, walking back towards the arena. “A few more minutes until the next bout.” He looked at the woman who was upset. “Don’t be so sad, I know for a fact you can afford a new one. Perhaps one that will fare better. Also, a surprise guest will be joining us in just a few minutes.”
A few of the owners looked perturbed. One spoke up, “I don’t like surprises, Mr. Katsuro. Who is it?”
“You will like this one,” he said. “Come, let’s get two more into the ring. Mr. Nalini, Mr. Kalyn, send your fighters in.”
“Someone from Wallace Corp is here,” Fletcher murmured, walking with Dee towards one of the couches.
Two male replicants went to the weapons table, one choosing an axe, the other a baseball bat, before entering the hexagon.
“Five minutes for bets!” Mr. Katsuro called out.
The POP POP of gunshots rang out from above them, somewhere in the mansion.
Everyone looked up.
“SWAT?” Dee whispered.
“It’s too soon,” Fletcher said. “Back to the locker room, now!”
Owners started standing up, looking confused.
Katsuro looked toward the stairs, his two guards moving away and drawing their weapons.
“Katsuro! What’s happening?” One man called out.
“I don’t understand…” Katsuro said, backing away.
Figures in black with automatic rifles rushed down the stairs, firing indiscriminately into the room.
The guards went down first.
Fletcher pulled Dee into the locker room and shut the door.
“What the fuck? Rival gang?” Dee asked, searching the room for anything useful.
“Wallace is cleaning house,” Fletcher said, standing by the door and listening.
Bursts of gunfire. Shouts and screams.
Dee took up position by the door.
“When they come in…” Fletcher whispered.
The door opened and a man with a rifle stepped in.
Dee attacked.
Surprise
Attempting to pull the weapon out of the replicants hands
STR + HTH → d12 + d10 = 11,1 → 2 successes*
*Critical
She grabbed the rifle, pulled the man into the room and ripped it out of his hands, tossing it to Fletcher.
The door closed behind him.
He threw a punch at Dee.
Dee blocked and hit him in the throat.
He gasped and stepped back.
Fletcher aimed and fired, putting a bullet in his shoulder.
He grunted.
Dee slammed the heel of her palm into his nose. There was a loud crack.
The man pushed her aside and charged Fletcher, tackling him.
The gun fell to the ground.
Fletcher scrambled, punching the man in his wounded shoulder and escaping from his grasp, grabbing the gun.
Dee ran and leaped into the air, snapping her foot forward into the man’s face.
His head snapped back and he collapsed.
The door burst open, revealing a female in black tactical gear, gun raised.
Fletcher flicked the gun to full auto and sprayed bullets at her.
Her right leg gives out from under her and she fell.
Dee rushed forward and without hesitation stomped the woman’s skull with her boot. She picked up the gun and stood to the side of the door.
Fletcher moved forward, taking up position on the other side.
Both breathed heavily, looking at each other’s eyes, not saying anything.
There was a moment of calm.
“Mika, report!” A voice called out from behind the door.
No answer. Bullets ripped through the door, blasting it to shreds.
Through the holes, Fletcher saw two more agents, a male and female, taking cover behind couches and aiming at the doorway.
They both spray bullets at the doorway.
Dee and Fletcher both get grazed.
Dee poked her head out and fired at the man, before pulling back.
Fletcher followed right after, aiming for the same target.
They both hit, wounding the man in the arm and leg.
The replicant agents returned fire, both aimed at Dee.
She ducked behind the wall, hearing the bullets whistle by. In the moment of calm after, she charges the male replicant, leaping over the couch and kicking him in the chest.
Fletcher leaned out and fired at the female replicant but missed.
The male agent fought back, slamming the butt of the gun into Dee’s stomach.
His female companion fired at Fletcher, who ducked back, bullets hitting the wall.
Dee grabbed the man’s head and pulled it down into her knee.
There was a loud crunch and the man collapsed.
Dee grabbed his gun and tipped over a coffee table, rolling behind it to gain cover from the last agent.
Fletcher fired at the female agent but missed yet again.
The female rose up, aimed, and fired at Dee.
The bullet went through the table and into Dee’s side.
She cried out in pain. Gritting her teeth, her shaking hands went into her pocket, grabbed an Instant Fix, and popped it into her mouth.
Hearing Dee cry out, Fletcher moved into the room, flanking the female agent, sliding behind another couch, and taking a clean shot, popping the agent in the arm.
The agent rolled to the side to put cover between them, before leaning out and returning fire, catching Fletcher’s leg.
Dee rose up and fired, still clutching the wound in her side.
The agent took the hit, but didn’t show signs of slowing.
Fletcher moved out into the open, flicking the gun to full auto and firing with everything he had. Bullets thudded into and through the couch, one catching the woman in the shoulder but not killing her. He dropped the gun and fell to his knees, giving up. “Just kill me,” he whispered.
The agent aimed and fired.
Fletcher took the hit in the chest and collapsed.
Dee rushed the agent, leaping over a couch and tackling her to the ground. She grabbed the agent’s head and smashed it into the ground.
The agent’s eyes went blank and she stopped moving.
Dee hurried over to Fletcher, rolling him onto his back.
“I give up…give up…kill me…I surrender…” he whispered, over and over, his eyes closed.
Dee gripped his hand. “We won, goddamnit.”
Manipulation: 8,1 → Success
He opened his eyes, looking at her. “Did we?” he asked, coughing up blood.
“Here, take one of these,” she said, pulling out an Instant Fix and making him swallow it. “You’re fucked up, we’re both fucked up, but we’re not going to die, not today.”
Looking around, she noticed the corpses. More than a dozen. The owners and their replicant fighters. The replicant agents in their tactical gear. Who knew how many bodyguards and servants, human or replicant, were dead in the mansion above. So much death.
She thought she could hear police sirens from outside, muffled, in the sudden silence. She cradled Fletcher’s head in her lap.
Mechanics Breakdown

The agent attacks Dee.

Afternoon
Location: LAPD - RDU - Medical Center
Fletcher woke up in a hospital bed. Looking over, he saw Dee in the next bed over. He closed his eyes, feeling pain radiate through his entire body.
“Goddamn,” he said, grimacing.
“You’re alive,” Dee said, turning and looking at him, wincing as she moved.
“You got that last guy, then.”
“Barely,” she said.
“Saved my life, again.”
She shook her head. “We saved each other.”
Holden came in, scowling. “You’re both lucky to be alive,” he growled. “I knew it was a bad idea.” He took a seat between the beds. “Now tell me what the hell happened. SWAT went in and found you both half-dead and dozens of bodies.”
Fletcher told most of it, with Dee interjecting with details, the mansion, the call, the arena. He looked at Dee, who revealed she’d been forced to fight and kill another replicant.
Holden took a deep breath and let them continue.
“Another fight was about to begin, when we heard gunfire from upstairs. Dee and I took cover in the locker room. Four replicant agents in tactical gear moved in and murdered everyone.” Fletcher looked into Holden’s eyes. “We all know who sent them.”
“You think Wallace Corp. sent them to cover their tracks?”
“Absolutely. You see that mansion? That amount of wealth? Wallace knew what was happening.” Fletcher raised, pointing a finger at Holden, ignoring the pain. “And somehow, knew we were there investigating, under cover.”
“That’s quite an accusation,” Holden said.
“I’m not accusing you,” Fletcher replied. “But you’re naive if you think Wallace doesn’t have ears in this place.” He let his arm rest and closed his eyes.
“What evidence did you find in the house?” Dee asked.
“Everything we need to take down the Golden Shards. Not that there’s many of them left, but we’re taking down everyone connected with the gambling ring and the death matches. We didn’t find anything connecting to Wallace other than some contracts purchasing replicants for servants and bodyguards. Nothing illegal.”
“What about the squad that came in and killed everyone?” Dee asked.
“Unregistered replicants. Wallace Corp has them and will be investigating how they they were obtained and by who.”
“How surprising,” Fletcher muttered. “I wonder if that investigation will go anywhere.”
Holden ignored the comment and stood. “The Golden Shards are gone. The gambling rings and death matches are over. You both did a good thing, here, don’t forget that.” He walked to the door and stopped, turning back, looking at Dee. He hesitated, before shaking his head. “I’m sorry Dee, but you have to take a baseline test. After all that’s happened, powers beyond me are worried, and forcing the issue, no matter what I say. I got them to push it until next shift at least, due to your injuries.”
“Bullshit, chief, she can barely walk!” Fletcher called out.
“It’s fine,” Dee said. “I’ll do it.”
“-But-”
“It doesn’t matter what you say, Fletcher,” she said, staring at the ceiling.
“It doesn’t change anything.”
Night

Dee sat in the familiar white room, facing the machine on the wall.
“State your baseline.”
“Mountains toppling evermore, into seas without a shore,” pause. “Seas that restlessly aspire, surging, unto skies of fire,” pause. “Lakes that endlessly outspread, their lone waters-lone and dead,” pause. “Their still waters, still and chilly.”
“Is your willpower waning? Seas.”
“Seas.”
“Have you ever lost someone? Seas.”
“Seas.”
Insight w/disadvantage: d8 = 6 → Success
The questions continued. Do you have a soul? Are you connected to another? Are you loved? To which she responded, always, “Seas.”
Then, the response required, changed.
“Are you afraid of wandering restlessly? Restlessly.”
“Restlessly.”
“What do you do when you can’t rest? Restlessly.”
“Restlessly.”
“Do others know you? Restlessly.”
“Restlessly.”
“What do you hold on to? Restlessly.”
“Is your focus failing? Restlessly.”
“Restlessly.”
“Into seas without a shore,” the voice stated.
“Into seas without a shore,” she repeated.
“Into seas without a shore.”
“Into seas without a shore.”
A moment of silence passed.
“You passed.”
After
“Vacation? What do you mean, vacation?” Dee asked.
Fletcher chuckled.
They were sitting in a 24-hr diner, drinking coffee.
At least, Fletcher was.
Dee’s cup sat untouched in front of her.
“Vacation. A few days off. Maybe a week. Or two. Time to spend with Lara. Time to spend outside of the office. A break.”
“A break,” Dee said, her voice flat, staring at him. “You need a break.”
“We both do,” he said.
“I don’t get…vacation time,” she said. “What would I even do?”
“I spoke to Holden. He’s willing to get you time off. If you feel you have to go in, you can. He’ll give you paperwork to do but he said no field work, not for awhile.”
“I see,” she said. She looked at her coffee. “Perhaps I can…take a few days off.”
Fletcher sipped at his coffee. “I’m not going to lie, it’s been a hell of a past couple weeks, these cases…some of the hardest I’ve seen in my career. The things we’ve had to do, we’ve had to endure…you more than me…” He shook his head. “We need a break from it. We need to get away from it. The job can’t be everything or else you’ll lose yourself in it.”
“You’ve been doing this a long time,” Dee said, looking into Fletcher’s eyes. “Is the job worth it? Is it worth…all this?”
It was Fletcher’s turn to look at his coffee. He took a moment and then shrugged. “I don’t know, Dee. I really don’t. I used to think so. We got extremist terrorists off the streets. We stopped a gambling ring from using replicants to fight death matches for entertainment. That should feel like something, shouldn’t it? Protecting the innocent and enforcing the laws. Maybe that’s enough.”
“But that’s not all we’re doing,” Dee said. “We’re also protecting Wallace Corp.”
Fletcher nodded and let out a sigh. “And maybe that’s all we can do. Maybe we can focus on the good that we do and the rest is…what it is. I don’t know. I don’t have the answers, Dee.”
Dee nodded. “I think I understand.” She shrugged. “Maybe time off…will be nice. I have someone I’d like to see.”
“Is that so?” Fletcher asked, surprised, leaning forward. “Good for you. What’s their name?”
“Her name is Levka. She works at Paradise Evolution. She’s…nice to talk to.”
“I’d love to meet her sometime,” Fletcher said, smiling.
Dee reached forward and picked up her cup of coffee, bringing it to her lips and sipping. She gave no reaction, other than a small shake of her head. “This coffee is disgusting.”
Fletcher laughed. “It’s supposed to be. That’s how you know it’s a good diner.”
Dee couldn’t help but smile.
“That doesn’t make any fucking sense.”

The End, for now
With that, we say goodbye to Dee and Fletcher for the time being. Battered but alive. Disillusioned with their jobs, but no way out that they can see.
I will return to this world and these characters, who I’ve really grown to enjoy writing and playing. It’s a really fun system where the mechanics really fit the theme well. I really felt in the world of Blade Runner. Solo-ing is clearly possible but not simple. Keeping track of everything on character sheets, what they can do in Investigations, Chases and Combat, etc. is a lot for one person to handle, along with the fact that mysteries are essential and can be some of the trickiest game types to manage solo.
What would I do differently? I might use a more sophisticated GM Emulator to generate different details and events, such as the Plot-Unfolding-Machine, Mythic, or Motif. Motif even has a specific system for mysteries where you acquire Clue Points and have to achieve a certain amount to solve the case, which I could see working for Blade Runner quite well.
All in all, I would recommend playing Blade Runner if you are interested in the world and themes you’ve been reading about these past 21 chapters. I may look into doing an Alien campaign at some point, which is from the same publisher and uses similar, but not the same, mechanics.
What’s next? Something fresh, new and exciting. A whole new world to play in. Next week, I’ll have a rundown of how playing Foundations went and what this new world looks like. I didn’t do a whole play-by-play write-up because it would have taken too long to be worth it, but I’ll give an overview of how the world came to be, it’s different cultures of people, and the current state.

Man, fights in Blade Runner can be brutal. Dee, especially, is lucky be alive after all that.

FWIW, Mythic also has an optional mystery generating subsystem, which is presented in Mythic Magazine #6 (https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/360212/mythic-magazine-volume-6). It's pretty neat.
